Jeronimos Monastery Exterior: Lisbon, Portugal

In 2007 my family and I visited the Jeronimos Monastery. Here is a photograph I took of the main entrance, the South Portal’s twin doors.

Between the two doors there is a statue of Prince Henry the Navigator. Above the doors, standing on a pedestal, is the Madonna. Above her is a window. And above the window stands the archangel Michael.

Just above the statue of Michael stands the cross of Portugal’s Order of Christ; however, due to my poor framing, the cross is not visible in my photo. (Shame on me.) Portugal’s Order of Christ was a former order of the legendary Knights Templar, which was a prominent Western Christian military order during the Medieval Ages and the Crusades.
